Dr S. Mitchell Lewis

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr S. Mitchell Lewis on Wednesday 8 August 2018.  Dr Lewis was a consultant haematologist working at the Hammersmith Hospital who founded UK NEQAS in collaboration with Professor Tom Whitehead (a clinical chemistry consultant) in 1969. The work Dr Lewis undertook on the performance of Haemoglobin measurement in the late 1960s led to the development of the Haemoglobincyanide reference standard under the guidance of the International Committee for Standardisation in Haematology (ICSH). Dr Lewis was Chair of the ICSH from 1982 to 1994 and was Director of UK NEQAS Haematology until his retirement in the mid-1990s.  Once retired from his emeritus position at the Hammersmith, the then Director established the Mitchell Lewis poster prize, which is given to the winning poster at the Haematology Participants’ meeting each year.
