Diagnostic Non Gyn Cytology
|Cellular Pathology
CLINICAL APPLICATION:
The UK NEQAS CPT Diagnostic Non Gyn Cytology scheme is aimed at laboratories / organisations performing a diagnostic non gyn cytology service, as part of routine Cellular Pathology or as a stand-alone unit. Diagnostic non gyn cytology is a specialist area within cellular pathology which utilises both the Papanicolou (PAP) and Romanowsky stains, in the interpretation of specimens to help identify various types of cancer and certain infections. It involves the microscopic examination of cells exfoliated into body fluids such as urine or obtained from body cavities in the chest, abdomen or from cysts, to identify disease. Samples can also be obtained by aspiration of cells from solid lumps using a fine needle. Diagnostic non gyn cytology can include fine needle aspiration (FNA), urine cytology, fluid cytology including crystals examination in synovial fluids, sputum cytology, brushings and washings cytology, cyst fluids, FNA fluids and cerebrospinal fluids. Preparations can be carried out by traditional spread techniques, cytospin or a liquid-based cytology single layer technique.
