The UK NEQAS CPT Mohs’ Procedure scheme is aimed at laboratories / organisations performing a Mohs’ procedure service, as part of routine Cellular Pathology or as a stand-alone unit. Mohs’ Procedure is carried out in a number of specialist and routine pathology centres and organisations in the UK and overseas. The technique is mainly used for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma but may also be used for other cutaneous tumour types. It is especially useful for tumours occurring on the face where a good cosmetic result is required. The tumour has usually been assessed for suitability for Mohs’ surgery by previous diagnostic biopsy. As Mohs’ Procedure is a specialised technique, it is approached as such within routine laboratories, employing specialist handling. The H&E stained frozen section slides are usually produced intra-operatively during micrographic skin surgery. They show tissue architecture and morphology and are taken to assess tumour removal, under microscopic control. The aim of the technique is to remove the entire tumour with complete circumferential and deep tissue margin clearance with the minimum of surrounding normal tissue. Best practice and close liaison with clinicians ensures ease of reporting to ensure correct diagnosis.
DISTRIBUTIONS PER YEAR: 6
PROGRAMME OF ANALYSIS:
UK NEQAS CPT Mohs’ Procedure scheme assesses the proficiency of participants on archival surgical Mohs’ Procedure biopsies using archival surgical Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained sections, and / or Toluidine Blue (Tol blue) stained sections at each distribution, 6 distributions annually. Using an agreed annual schedule, participants who have registered with UK NEQAS CPT, receive and return to UK NEQAS CPT sections of tissue that they have tested for an agreed test item.
Details of the performance criteria for this programme can be obtained from UK NEQAS Cellular Pathology Technique (CPT) directly.
